ICANN Updates International Domain Name Test Plan

ICANN has taken into account the comments of visitors to public forums about the manner in which evaluation International Domain Name top-level domains (IDN TLDs) are to be inserted into the root zone.

An amendment (PDF, 241k) has been made to the proposed label of the Persian TLD. ICANN has been under pressure for several years to make the internet "international" by allowing non-Latin characters in Domain Names, and particularly in top-level domains. ICANN's move to comply has sparked controversy, as some critics argue that online fraud will be easier when there are similar-looking or identical characters with different codes available for the domain names of phishing sites.
