Tennis Australia Accused of Illegal Domain Name Purchase

Tennis Australia has paid what it described as a "hefty amount" for the internet domain tennis.com.au, but the purchase may have been illegal because of laws surrounding the buying and selling of specific TLD addresses. Tennis Australia has attempted to negotiate with the owner of tennis.com.au, a "friendly cybersquatter", for around 2 years, and has eventually acquired the Domain Name for a sum which a spokesman says Tennis Australia was unhappy with. However, according to auDA, it is illegal to buy and sell com.au domain names, and the purchase is therefore being investigated.

Tennis Australia claims the deal was part of a deal involving other assets, and was therefore legitimate. If the deal is ruled to be illegal, however, the domain name could go back on the open market, where anyone with a legitimate, tennis-related use for it could register it. Calls are being made for the law to be relaxed to allow deals like this to go through. The original holder of the domain certainly wasn’t using it for a tennis-related business; the site gave a contact address for those wishing to purchase the domain and stated that the site received 1300 hits a day. The purchase of the domain has been credited with a two-fold increase in traffic on the site, says Chief Executive of Tennis Australia, Steve Wood. "It will be redeveloped to sell merchandise and tickets and offer photos and archival tennis footage."

There are fears that a loosening of the rules about buying and selling .com.au Domain Names could lead to an increase on cybersquatting with these domains.
