Simpsons Movie Domain Turned Over To 20th Century Fox
The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) has ruled that Keith Malley must turn over his thesimpsonsmovie.com domain to Twentieth Century Fox, who owns the Simpsons trademark. Twentieth Century Fox refused an offer to buy the Domain Name for US$50,000, instead opting to complain to WIPO that this was a case of illegal cybersquatting, as the domain had been registered "in bad faith".
Keith Malley offered no defence for his behaviour. The ruling is a timely one, as the film will appear on big screens worldwide tomorrow. Twentieth Century Fox filed its complaint in May, but it has taken until now to come to a decision. WIPO has so far ruled on over 10,500 cybersquatting cases involving famous brand names.
Originally, Malley's site featured links to off-colour and sometimes sexually explicit material featuring characters from The Simpsons television series; later, Malley changed the site's focus to features and advertising about the popular podcast he produces, "Keith and the Girl".
