ICANN Encourages Public Input for New gTLDs
ICANN, the governing body for the domain name system, is continuing to encourage comments and suggestions from the public about how it should introduce new generic top-level domain names. New gTLDs could give domain registrants much more choice in the domain names they want to register, as available .com and .net Domain Names are rapidly drying up. President and CEO of ICANN Paul Twomey remarked,
"This is all about providing Internet users with choice. More top-level domains - the part of the Domain Name that comes after the last dot – mean more competition, more options, and the possibility for more targeted or user-specific domain names. When coupled with ICANN’s current work on introducing internationalized domain names, it is possible that hundreds and, eventually, more than 1,000 new TLDs could be created."
