£.com Up For Sale
£.com, and its partner domain name poundsymbol.com, are up for sale this month. The domain name makes use of International Domain Name technology, so accessing the site requires an up-to-date browser such as Firefox 2 or Internet Explorer 7. According to Marketshare, IDN-enabled browsers are now at around 45% market share worldwide.
Only 18 countries in the world have the £ symbol on their keyboards, so other users will have to insert the symbol in some other way. The current owners of the domain claim that there are only 16 symbols which can be used as Domain Names. The owners claim that the domain name is both short and easy to remember, and descriptive of the site's premise without resorting to a long descriptive domain. It is therefore thought to be an extremely marketable domain, and it remains to be seen how much prospective purchasers will be willing to pay.
