Nominet and Domain Fraud

Nominet (.uk registry) has linked up with Oxford Brookes University for two years to develop anti-abuse technology for the Domain Name System (DNS). The University has assigned two researchers to work with Nominet in order to achieve the results.

Jay Daley, IT Director said "We are considerably more sophisticated than anyone else in the internet registry space and this takes it to an even further level. One associate will look at artificial intelligence learning techniques, and the other will look at statistical techniques and ways to visualise large sets of data."

The project may include analysis of DNS look-up data (to detect new botnets going live), or studying Whois look-ups (to see if criminals were trying to harvest details of domain name registrants).
