New Domains Snapped up by Apple Inc. and Google
Proving the importance of protecting your product with a new domain name ahead of launch, Apple Inc have now registered the domain AppleFinalCutProX.com. Believe it or not this is a relatively new trend at Apple, as they have got themselves in trouble in the past with not registering the domains ahead of product announcements!
The registration was made on the same day that the technology giant announced the launch of their newest version of the video editing software Final Cut Pro X. Apple Inc currently owns around 1,700 domain names and they picked up another 50 earlier this month relating to various announcements they made at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) earlier this year. Many of these domains were centred around cloud computing and streaming content, as well as domains featuring key words such as “ipad”, “macmail” and “iphone”.
The newly registered AppleFinalCutProX.com domain currently forwards to a sub directory of apple.com advertising the product and inviting interested parties to download it for $299.99. It is thought that the domain was registered purely for brand protection purposes and there is no plan to place an active site on the domain itself. Interestingly however, they seem to have missed out on the doman FinalCutProX.com which is registered at Go Daddy under Private Registration.
They’re not the only large company currently snapping up domain names to add to their portfolio either. Last week it was announced that Google appeared to be registering around 100 domain names centred around getting Americans online. All the domains registered followed three main formats, such as: AlaskaGetOnline.com, GetAlaskaOnline.com, GetOnlineAlaska.com. The domains registered appear to cover 50 states and there has been whispers that it may be for PR purposes to help people across America get faster broadband connections. One of their new registrations has the potential to cause an issue with a very large ISP already existing in America however, as Google have registered the generic GetAmericaOnline.com. AmericaOnline.com is in use at the moment by AOL, directing to their main site aol.com.
Google have yet to comment on the registrations, but a company that works to register domains on Google’s behalf registered these, along with the domain HowFastIsYourBrowser.com at the same time. We will all watch this space to see what Google does with their newly acquired domain names!
