Microsoft Suffers From Cybersquatter Attack
Microsoft has suffered from another spate of cybersquatting, this time from a California dentist. Dr Saed Said has registered over 40 Domains which Microsoft claims infringe their trademarks.
Registered domains include aMicrosoftShop.com and XboxOutlet.info. Microsoft argued that the sites these domains pointed to were designed to mislead and confuse Web users. They added, "The person has been diverted from the Microsoft Web site he or she was seeking to visit, and Microsoft has lost the opportunity to interact with that person." Apparently, Said has been profiting from the misdirection by advertising non-Microsoft products. Microsoft has demanded that Said pay $100,000 per abused Domain Name, as well as additional damages. It also wants control of the domain names to be handed over.
Instances of prominent cybersquatting cases such as this continue to increase. Only recently, popular social networking site MySpace claimed control of the domain name MySpaceTV.org after a similar suit was filed. The EMI Group also won a cybersquatting case filed with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) over emi-musicgroup.info, which offered nothing but sponsored links.
