NIC Mexico Chosen to Create Latino TLD

The Latin American and Caribbean Federation for Internet and e-Commerce (eCom-LAC) have selected NIC Mexico, the domain registry for the .mx Mexican country-code top-level domain, to be its partner in a proposal for the creation of a Latino TLD.

The proposal for the Latino TLD will eventually be presented to ICANN, after a few months of hard work by eCom-LAC and NIC Mexico. ICANN will then review and rule on the proposal.

We are very proud of have been selected by eCOM-LAC, we recognize the relevance of this project for Latin America, so this achievement acknowledges the excellent work that NIC Mexico has been performing, said Oscar Robles, the CEO of NIC Mexico. The creation of a Top Level Domain for Latinos represents a great benefit for those who share the Latin culture, allowing to identify resources of specific interest for the Latin community and helping to promote our language, culture and businesses to the entire world.

eCom-LAC and NIC Mexico are hoping ICANN will open itself to proposals at the beginning of 2008, giving them the opportunity to make their case. They believe that ICANN's recent decisions to allow the .asia and .eu top-level domains mean that they have a fighting chance of being accepted.
