IPV6 – Allocation New IP Addresses

Forecasts predict that over the next three years the main area of Internet Protocol addresses from IPv4 will be deleted. As from 1st January 2011 NIC Mexico will be unable to allocate IPv4 addresses, only IPv6 will be used.

NIC Mexico manages the country code top level domain and registers IP addresses in Mexico. LACNIC manage and allocate Internet Resources within Latin America. NIC Mexico and LACNIC are responsible for creating awareness in the Internet Community to establish anticipation and ensure the community are encouraged to take the relevant steps.

Oscar Robles, NIC Mexico's CEO commented about creating awareness so that suitable measures can be taken. He mentioned the rapid growth of the internet internationally and the extension into mobile and other non-traditional devices.

The NIC Mexico recommended migrating version 6 of the protocol (IPv6) into companies, governments and institutions to help in the analysis of possible needs and requirements and help with time constraints.

Organisations must evaluate if they need the new adoption and will need to implement this before 1 November 2011 in this case. Oscar Robles also stated that companies who already know if they require more IP address allocations after 2011 must finalise the process by 1st January 2011. NIC Mexico has stated that IPv4 addresses are nearly all used up and within the next three years the central pool may be depleted.

Oscar Robles concluded that by 2011 all IPv4 addresses may have been consumed. IPv6 main function is a network layer protocol for packet switched inter-networks. It replaces IPv4 with the main improvement being the number of addresses. 4.3 billion Addresses would not be practical for supporting all embedded and portable devices. IPv6 could support 340 billion, billion, billion addresses which could allow mobile phones and electronic devices to have their own addresses.
