Anti-Piracy Website Commandeered by Pirates

Software pirates have hijacked the domain name of one of the music industry’s most prominent anti-piracy organisations. IFPI.com, which originally belonged to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, is now in use by The Pirate Bay, a well-known website which offers the world’s largest BitTorrent tracker, with hundreds of thousands of torrents available, a high proportion of which are for illegally copied content.

The Pirate Bay claims that it did not steal the Domain Name, but that it was donated to them by someone who did not reveal their means of acquiring it. As of 16th October 2007, the domain points to a site with the title "International Federation of Pirates Interests" [sic], and The Pirate Bay claims that it intends to make further use of the domain. This acquisition of the IFPI’s domain name follows a series of skirmishes between the two groups.
