ICANN Plans to Retire Yugoslavian Domain
The now-obsolete Yugoslavian country-code top-level domain, .yu, will shortly be dropped from ICANN's official list of top level domains. This is four years after Yugoslavia dissolved because of civil war, and it will probably take a further two or three years for users to switch to the new country codes of .rs (Serbia) and .me (Montenegro).
The dropping of the anachronistic top-level domain name seems to have reminded ICANN of the troublesome .su ccTLD, which refers to the defunct Soviet Union. Despite the fact that it is not included on the official list, there are about 10,000 registered .su domains, with 1500 having been added in the last year. ICANN would love to get rid of the TLD, but it has developed something of a cult status, and current owners are unwilling to give up their Domain Registration.
