ICANN Registerfly Update
In May 2007, ICANN requested RegisterFly to be found in contempt for failure to comply with the preliminary injunction issued in April 2007. The contempt order will enable ICANN to seize domain registration data needed to effect a full and complete transfer of their domains to other registrars.
ICANN have received four expressions of interest for the transfer provider role. The transfer provider will contact RegisterFly customers affected and provide details to move domains to a new registrar.
ICANN expect to receive full and complete applications for the role during the week and will make decisions shortly afterwards.
ICANN is also working with registries to make the transfer process as efficient as possible. Thousands of domains are affected by the ProtectFly proxy registration system, where the registrants’ actual names are not included in the domain’s records meaning swift transfer is more difficult, ICANN is doing everything possible to gain access to registrants’ full details for domains. If this is not possible, a system will be introduced which will enable registrants to authenticate themselves and regain access to the domain name.
ICANN continues to urge RegisterFly to co-operate with a large transfer of all RegisterFly registrations to a different ICANN-accredited registrar. This would benefit registrants as it would eliminate necessity for the transfer provider. ICANN continues to act quickly and with registrants’ best interests.
