ICANN Meeting in Seoul: An Introduction

ICANN’s 36th international public meeting held last week was the final of three held annually to discuss policy development. There were 1,207 attendees - Domainmonster.com was one of them - from a huge total of 111 different countries over the seven day duration of the conference. The participants engaged in a wide range of discussions about the Internet’s domain name system and related issues. Here are some details about what happened in the first meeting.

Hosted by ICANN and KISA (Korea Internet & Security Agency), the conference opened with discussion about how the internet has impacted the world since it was born 40 years ago. The importance of IP addresses was also given considerable thought and they were described as important assets for the future. The introductions of International Domains were also branded as the “new way toward the future.”

And it looks like Korea are one of the leaders in this growing information society as 76% of its citizens are now online. Mr. Heung Kil Ko - Senator and Chairman of the Culture, Sports, and Tourism, Broadcasting and Communications Committee of the National Assembly – stated that internet security threats such as hacking and phishing must be given chief importance.
