ICANN - Public Comments Requested on DNS Stability
THE ICANN community has just finished a policy development process about the introduction of new generic top level domains (gTLDs). This took place within ICANN’s Generic Names Supporting Organisation (GNSO). The resulting recommendations can be seen here , and will be used to help guide ICANN in introducing new gTLDs to the namespace
The GNSO made a recommendation and concluded that “ICANN must implement a process that allows the introduction of new top-level domains” and called for the implementation of a procedure that respects the principles of fairness, transparency and non-discrimination.
In preparation for the implementation of the new gTLD policy recommendations, members of staff are conducting reviews and analysis of the technical uses that will arise in this development. With the addition of gTLDs to the namespace this means an expansion to the DNS on a large scale to include many more names at the highest level.
On of the main policy recommendations developed to coincide with the introduction of the new gTLDs has a requirement that states "Strings must not cause any technical instability" ICANN published this paper to allow informed input on the technical issues that are relevant to the implementation of the new gTLDS. This also allows transparency towards how it will interpret and implement these recommendations. The overall aim is a clear and concise set of rules that will be accessible to new gTLDs applicants, this is so that it is known from the start what tests will be applied to each application.
