Domain Names that Sell for Millions

Creditcheck.com sold for USD$3 million last month in New York, at an invitation-only auction hosted by Moniker.com. Over 200 domain names were sold, for a total of USD$10.8 million. Seniors.com also broke the million mark, drawing USD$1.8 million.

The industry average, according to broker and domain parking service Sedo.com, is about USD$2,000-3,500, but growth in online advertising and the ever-shrinking number of good available Domain Names have forced up the price tag for short or generic term domain .coms. Matt Bentley, chief strategy officer for Sedo.com, says, "You're seeing a perfect storm created by converging factors that are resulting in an increase in domain values."

The list of the five most expensive domain is topped, predictably, by sex.com, originally registered in 1994 by a software salesman, and selling for USD$12 million – the only Domain Name so far to sell for eight figures. It was bought in 2005 by Boston-based Escom LLC. Porn.com comes a close second, at USD$9.5 million, bought in May 2007 by MXN Ltd.

Business.com, Diamond.com and Beer.com all sold for more than USD$7 million.
