Dot TK Cleans Up .tk Registry

The Tokelau country code top level domains registry, Dot TK, has taken hundreds of domain names offline. This move came after a damning report in March by internet security firm McAfee, which warned web users that about 10% of .tk Domain Names resolved to sites which were "unusually risky" in terms of the chances of inadvertently downloading viruses, spyware or adware, or being spammed. The chief executive of Dot TK admitted that the registry had seen a decline of about 10% in .tk registrations since March in countries where the report had hit the press.

Although the report had something to do with Dot TK's decision to filter content with its new WatchDot software, commentators argue that advertising was the main motivation for Dot TK's crackdown on illicit content. Dot TK has a content policy which bans adult content, hate speech and so on. The new software automatically filters out newly registered domains it thinks are redirecting to unsuitable websites, increasing advertisers' confidence that their adverts will not appear at the top of a site featuring pornography or gambling.
