Threats to Domainers

Several threats to the domain industry were identified by Phil Corwin, the Internet Commerce Association, at the SedPro conference in New York. These included classification of a Domain Name where property versus a license and conflicts of interest for the Registrar, Trademarks and Search engines. He concluded with concerns for ICA’s uncertain future and stated many registrars are retaining out-of-date Domain Names.

Claims were also made about ICANN. Corwin proposed ICANN were willing to sacrifice the main interests of the domain industry for other deals (e.g. the Verisign settlement) and that ICANN would like to become private in order to insulate from litigation. He also mentioned the variable pricing scheme brought up during discussions, the supporting registry discovering .xxx and a potential power struggle with Vint Cerf no longer on the board.
