Dire Straits Wins WIPO Domain Dispute
The UK rock band Dire Straits has secured direstraits.com in an intellectual property dispute that was filed against Alberta Hot Rods. The Canadian company registered the domain in what the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) ruled was bad faith. The company has been involved in several Domain Name Registration disputes in the past, including one over tomcruise.com.
WIPO ruled that direstraits.com is identical to a trademark owned by the members of the rock band, and that the respondent had no rights or legitimate interests in ownership of the name. As of 3rd September 2007, the domain is still live, the website calling itself an "unofficial fan site", despite being loaded with pay-per-click advertising and portals.
