Afilias Begins DDoS TLD Protection

DDoS may soon be a thing of the past with news that Afilias, the .ORG, .INFO, .AERO and .MOBI operator is soon to begin implementing their DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack prevention.

DDoS attacks are commonly carried out using compromised machines on the internet, which are then used to flood a target website with traffic, making it unavailable to all other internet users. By monitoring traffic being routed to a domain, Afilias hopes to be able to detect these attacks and stop any potential attacks.

The initiative is planned to detect excessive traffic following a certain pattern at the network level and that the malicious traffic is contained and only the real traffic can get through to a site, according to Afilias India member of Board of Directors Ram Mohan.

The initiative is to be launched on the Indian .in TLD, with plans to include .ORG, .INFO, .AERO and .MOBI by June 2007.

It will be interesting to see once rolled out whether these monitoring services will be 100% accurate, or whether there is the chance that genuine traffic will occasionally blocked in error. If succssful then perhaps this technology will be rolled out on all TLDs to make website DDoS attacks a thing of the past.

Afilias operates the .ORG, .INFO, .AERO and .MOBI TLDs as well providing registry services for .AG (Antigua and Barbuda), .BZ (Belize), .GI (Gibraltar), .HN (Honduras), .IN (India), .LA (Laos), .SC (the Seychelles), and .VC (St. Vincent and the Grenadines).
