137 Million Internet Users on Chinese Mainland
China Internet Network Information Center has issued its 19th report about the development of China's Internet industry. The report demonstrates that, as of December 31, 2006, there were 137 million Internet users in China – more than 10% of China's total population, and an increase of over 23% over the same period of the previous year. 104 million internet users in China were using broadband and 17 million were using mobile phones to access to the Internet. This was the first time that CNNIC had included statistics about mobile phone Internet use in their report. Beijing citizens' Internet literacy rate was 30%, which was the highest in the country.
Of all the internet users in mainland China, nearly 60% were male and just over 40% were female, and the Internet literacy rate in urban areas was considerably higher than in rural areas. By the end of 2006, China had about 4.11 million Domain Names, of which 1.8 million were .CN domain names, up almost 65% compared with the same period of the previous year. 1.94 million of them used the .com TLD, accounting for over 45% of China's total domain names.
