According to the city's IT commission in Shanghi, Important Websites - which is run by city government departments - have now adopted the use of a Domain Name that uses Chinese characters only so as to make it easier for elderly people and others not fluent in pinyin to use.

Names using Chinese characters have been adopted by the Websites - that is is run by the Shanghai Municipal People's Congress Website (www.spcsc.com) and the local government's portal (www.shanghai.gov.cn) and which attracted 200 million page-views in 2006, according to Shanghai Municipal Informatization Commission. However the old domains still divert to the sites.
