Businesses Late Registering With Social Brands

A number of businesses have overlooked the importance of registering their branded domains on some of the major social sites, with McDonalds, Nike, Pepsi and even MySpace itself too late.

What is interesting is that there doesn’t appear to be much chance of MySpace demanding they be handed over to the corporations, IF the MySpace Domain Name debacle involving Fox’s "Bones" TV series and an indie band of the same name in November, 2006, is any indication. The result of this was MySpace eventually returning the domain name to the band. However this stance puts MySpace in a position where they could lose financially by not being able to sell the valuable internet properties at a high price. However they risk enraging their users, if they sniff favouritism for businesses.

Additionally there’s the risk to businesses that domains featuring their brand name, such as text , could fall in to the wrong hands including activists and hackers, with no solution at present.

So while Myspace claims it won’t remove users from>Domain Names that include trademarked brands, even though it owns and controls those domains and the web address, we’ll have to wait and see for how long this remains the case.
